About the Organization
Shriners Children's Texas was created in response to the Texas City refinery explosion in 1947. After the disaster, the need for nearby burn center was readily apparent, so in 1963, the Shriners created a burn institute at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) while a specialized burn hospital was constructed on land adjacent to UTMB. In 1966, the construction was complete, and the hospital was adopted into Shriners Hospital System. Recognized as a leader in burn care, Shriners Children's Texas delivers critical burn treatment services and skin therapies to children with the most critical burn injuries. Since entering the burn care field fifty-five years ago, Shriners Children's Texas has doubled the survival rate for children with burns over more than 50 percent of their body through phenomenal breakthroughs in skin grafting procedures, infection control and burn best care practices. The hospital has now expanded to include comprehensive burn, orthopedics, and cleft lip and palate specialized pediatric care. Our current goal is to broaden our mission by serving more children in diverse areas via on-site care, remote clinics and telehealth.
