Adult Literacy Council of The Concho Valley

To provide literacy services to the residents of the Concho Valley. Low literacy rates are linked to higher crime and poverty rates, poorer health, and lower economic growth. Literacy rates impact the current and future workforce, well well-being of neighborhoods, and the next generation of young learners. Low literacy impacts all of us and the time to ACT IS NOW! LITERACY has the power to change lives!

The mission of our organization is to offer encouragement and practical assistance to anyone who wants to learn (read, write, speak English, gain computer skills, citizenship, and financial literacy)
The Council provides free one-on-one or group tutoring in the areas of interest or need.

English as a second language and conversation, high school equivalency (GED), reading and math skills/financial literacy, and citizenship are our most utilized services.

Literacy skills gained will enable the adult learner to increase job opportunities, income and encourage future generations, and improve health care, and parenting.

Each one.....Teaches one!!! Volunteers make it happen! We are always needing and wanting volunteers. All are welcome.

All funds raised will assist with educational materials and operating costs for sustainability.

A gentleman comes from out of town daily for ESL classes. He states that "when at church" he understands more. Church has meaning for him now. He is a single parent now raising his two grandchildren. He never learned English or Spanish growing up. He worked in the fields and learned about hard work and honesty.

A gentleman approximately 50 years old came in and wanted his GED. He said that math was the subject he wanted to pass first. I said WHY? He reported that math was his hardest subject when he was in school. However, the older he got the more he needed it. So he studied math first. He passed the math test after several times. He studied at the ALC and at home. He now has his GED and has entered college!!!!!
