The Painted Rocks Historical Site, Inc. (PRHS) was established in 2025 to protect and preserve 1,500 pictographs and petroglyphs covering a thousand-foot expanse of a limestone bluff fronting the Concho River in Concho County. Beyond stewardship, our mission is to share the site with current and future generations, as well as provide research and educational opportunities to students, scholars, and to those with historical connections to the land.

PRHS is building upon the stewardship ethos of the Campbell family, which began when Fred and Cora Campbell invited noted researchers, Forrest and Lula Kirkland, to record the rock art in the mid-1930s. Since then, the family has opened the site to curious visitors, archaeologists, rock art researchers, and descendant communities. Last year, over 400 visitors toured the site.

Most notably, PRHS serves as a dynamic entry point into the larger (his)story of the Concho River valley. Indigenous rock art, historical graffiti, and archaeological deposits preserved on the grounds offer a tangible lens through which visitors can understand the broader forces that shaped our history – the presence of Indigenous peoples, Spanish colonialism, German and Anglo immigration, frontier expansion, and numerous military campaigns.

Mission

Our mission at the Painted Rocks Historical Site, Inc., is to preserve, raise awareness, and share the site and its rock art with current and future generations.

Needs

The Painted Rocks recently established a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization: Painted Rocks Historical Site, Inc. Our mission is simple, yet important - to preserve, raise awareness, and share the site and its rock art with current and future generations.

If you’ve ever visited the Painted Rocks, you understand there is something deeply meaningful about standing in a place where history still speaks. It is a treasure worth protecting and sharing.

Today, we’re honored to participate in San Angelo Gives, which began on April 21 and runs through May 5. Our goal - to raise $7,000 to create an educational video that helps tell the story of Painted Rocks to visitors and the public.

We envision a video that will weave together four key storylines: (1) prehistoric and historic rock imagery; (2) gatherings of descendant communities; (3) educational programs; and (4) researchers at work documenting and interpreting the landscape.

Whether you give $5, $50, $500, or more, every gift matters and helps preserve this irreplaceable place for generations to come. Gifts can quickly and securely be processed by clicking the “Donate” button above.

Thank you for believing in this mission and walking alongside us.
