The Conch Valley Master Gardeners program, designed for Pre-K and 3rd grade students, draws it's inspiration from the government program, Learn, Grow, Eat and Go. This comprehensive year long program adopts a hands-on approach to teach children about nutrition, plants and nature.
Our primary objectives include encouraging children to eat healthier foods at an early age and promote experimental learning. By doing so we aim to combat childhood obesity and foster a deeper connection with nature. Over the past 4 years the program has undergone significant expansion with the SAISD. We have grown from a single school and instructor to all pre-K programs, 5 schools and 9 instructors. Through this program children have the opportunity to grow and harvest a variety of plants, such as potatoes, carrots, lettuce, broccoli and onions. They also gain insight into the importance of our pollinators, butterflies, birds, bees and how snails and worms improve the soil. They learn how rain water and sunlight are vital to provide everything plants need to grow and how to be good stewards of the land.
Presently we are reaching approximately 260 pre-K students and 100 3rd grade students. As government funding has ceased, we need your support to continue and to expand our efforts providing more children with the opportunity to LEARN, GROW, EAT, and GO.
Contributions received will directly benefit our students gardening activities and creative projects providing them with plants, seeds, potting supplies and materials for craft projects that they can share with their families. Our goal is to raise $3,000-4,000. Every donation regardless of size will bring us closer to our objectives. Thank you for considering or cause.
The Mission of the Concho Valley Master Gardeners is to provide information on earth-friendly landscape and gardening practices to the general public. Our goal is to educate the public on landscaping techniques, to beautify the land and to conserve water, our most precious natural resource. The Concho Valley Master Gardeners Association includes gardeners in Tom Green, Coke, Concho, Irion, Reagan, Runnels, Sterling and Sutton counties.
The Concho Valley Master Gardeners is a resource for our community and the surrounding areas. We propagate native perennial and annual plants and grasses from September until the first Saturday in April, when we have our annual Spring Plant Sale. We are one of the few Master Gardeners in Texas that propagate from cuttings and seeds. Our master gardeners offer educational programs for landscaping, water conservation, and Earthkind landscape programs. We also work and partner within the local school districts to bring learning opportunities to preschool and elementary students and assist in classes for junior high and high school students to become Junior Master Gardeners.
The master gardeners planted and maintain the demo beds at the 4H building. There you can walk through the beds and see what thrives in West Texas.
ANNUAL PLANT SALE:
The Concho Valley Master Gardeners Annual Spring Plant Sale began over ten years ago as a fundraiser for our organization. Since then, it has grown tremendously. Last year, over 6.000 plants were sold, and propagation team members volunteered over 2,000 hours to grow the plants for the sale.
