No Senior Should Face Hunger or Isolation Alone
On May 5, your gift can go even further.
For many seniors living alone, the Meals For The Elderly volunteer delivering their meal is the only person they will see that day.
That simple knock on the door brings more than nourishment. It brings conversation, a friendly smile, and the reassurance that someone in the community cares.
At 93 years old, one of our recipients lives alone in the home where she raised her family. Cooking is no longer safe, and most days she doesn’t leave the house. When the Meals For The Elderly volunteer arrives each afternoon, that visit means everything. It’s a hot meal, a moment of connection, and the comfort of knowing she hasn’t been forgotten.
Meals For The Elderly delivers approximately 600 hot meals every weekday to homebound seniors across Tom Green, Irion, and Concho counties, as well as Miles, Texas. In 2024 alone, more than 250,000 meals were delivered to over 1,000 individuals who depend on this service to remain safe and independent in their homes.
For many recipients, our volunteers are not only delivering food, they are providing a daily safety check and a moment of human connection.
Meals For The Elderly began in 1974 when San Angelo resident Mary Alice Rodgers saw the need to help elderly neighbors who could no longer prepare meals for themselves. With space donated by Sol Mayer and the help of community volunteers, the program began by serving just 16 recipients.
More than 50 years later, that small act of compassion has grown into a vital community service. Over the years, Meals For The Elderly has delivered more than 4 million meals to over 10,000 individuals, helping seniors remain in the homes and neighborhoods they love.
Meals For The Elderly is a private nonprofit organization and does not participate in government reimbursement programs. Our work is powered entirely by the generosity of donors, volunteers, and community partners.
This year, during San Angelo Gives on May 5, your support can go even further. Through a partnership with ASCO Equipment, donations made on May 5 will be matched up to $100,000, with those funds distributed at the end of the year. In addition, AEP Texas is providing a $5,000 matching gift, increasing the impact even more.
That means your gift helps provide more meals, more visits, and more moments of connection for seniors who rely on this service each day.
A simple knock on the door can change someone’s entire day. Your gift on May 5 helps make that knock possible.
Empowering individuals of our community to maintain autonomy within the comfort of their homes by delivering nourishing meals, coordinating services, and providing personal interaction.
